CHAPTER XV
Leeta gave Iron Eyes a quick look. "I don't have time to explain, but you just became a specimen. If I act strange, you've got to believe in me, John. I'm going to have to play this smart. I don't know how it will come out, but I'll do my best. Remember, I'm still on your side!" She stood to meet them, rifle in her hands.
"Attention!" A loudspeaker announced in Romanan. "You are in violation of a military proclamation. Return to your village at once. Failure to do so immediately will end in arrest and confiscation of property. Drop your weapons immediately and explain the nature of your business to the guard!"
The marines were all around them, blasters leveled. "Drop your weapons! I repeat! Drop your weapons!" the speaker boomed.
Leeta shook her head slightly as she looked at the shining figures that surrounded her. "Or what. Corporal?" she hollered in Standard. "If I don't, you'll burn me down?"
"That's right!" came the stiff replyâin Standard if the Corporal had only thought about it.
"Look, fella!" Leeta snorted to cover her triphammer heartbeat. "I won this thing fair and square, so you can go to Hell! Further, for your report to the Colonel, you can tell him you personally wasted Doctor Leeta Dobra! Now, what the hell took you goons so long?" By that time, she was almost walking right down the corporal's throat.
She stopped several paces in front of the man, seeing his shocked face behind the reflector on his helmet. "Shut that blast visor off and look at me, soldier," she growled. "I don't like talking to a mirror."
The visor flashed off, leaving her looking at a fair-skinned young man. He gulped, blue eyes wide with dismay.
"Wish you could have been here earlier. Had a time with that thing." She hooked a thumb at the dead bear. "You!" She pointed at two of the privates who'd flipped off their visors. "Get that man on board!" She indicated Iron Eyes. "If you hurt him, I'll personally have your asses served to me on a silver plate, got that!"
They nodded slightly and rushed over to where John lay, breaking out a portable antigrav in their hurry.
"D-Doctor Dobra?" the corporal stuttered. "I'm sorry ma'am. We ... had no idea. I mean if we'd known, we'd a burned that dragon at the start!"
"At the start?" she demanded in a strained voice. "You mean you sat up there and let that thing almost..." She couldn't finish.
"But ma'am!" The corporal's eyes were wide.
Leeta's world narrowed. All she saw was the corporal's face. "Get me Colonel Ree!" she hissed viciously. "You get him right now! Patch through! I guess I'm a high priority item so hop to it or burn me down right here, 'cause sure as vacuum is empty, I'll get a report in somehow!"
"You get that. Lieutenant?" the corporal was shrilling into his helmet mike.
"Yeah, patch-through's coming," a faint voice could be heard through his helmet speakers.
The corporal wilted under Leeta's fiery glare. She could feel her mouth twitching with anger.
